AI-generated content has been suspected of overwhelming many online and social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Reddit, and even Google.
This study aims to add to the conversation by exploring the amount of posts on Facebook that are likely AI-generated.
Our study looks at 8,885 long Facebook posts gathered for the past six years.
The introduction of ChatGPT in November 2022 was a great catalyst causing a surge in Likely AI-generated Facebook content.
Following this launch, likely AI-generated content on Facebook consistently increased.
As of the end of 2024, it’s now exceeding 40%.
We segmented our data into two distinct periods: Pre and Post ChatGPT.
From 2018 to late 2022 (pre-ChatGPT), the percentage of likely AI-generated content increased gradually, remaining at an average of 5.34% AI content monthly.
During this period, AI appeared to have limited spread on the platform.
However, the trend changed significantly in 2023, after the release of ChatGPT.
Pre-2020 Likely AI Content — Generative AI use was very limited and the AI that our AI detector identified in this time period can be viewed as the upper limit of the false positive rate for this dataset.
Starting with the launch of GPT-3 many AI writing tools such as Jasper.ai and Copy.ai were released to millions of users, starting the initially gradual increase we see in the graph.
The post-ChatGPT era highlighted a significant surge in likely AI-generated content.
Between 2023 and November 2024, the average of likely AI-generated content per month was 24.05% reflecting a 4.3x increase.
Our analysis of the current data as of November 2024, shows that likely AI-generated content has reached 41.18%.
This suggests a growing interest in the adoption of AI for Facebook content amongst different users.

We collected and analyzed 8,855 long-form Facebook posts from various users using a 3rd party. This dataset spans from 2018 to November 2024, with a minimum of 100 posts per month, each containing at least 100 words. These posts were processed through Our AI detector tool using the Lite model to identify trends in likely AI-generated content and to determine the current percentage of such content on the platform.
The long-form posts collected were based on popular keywords and events between 2018 - Nov 2024, covering a wide range of topics such as Entertainment, Politics and Society, Business and Entrepreneurship, Fashion and Beauty, Technology, Lifestyle, and more.

When making the tool we had to make each prompt as general as possible to be able to include every kind of input. Not to worry though ChatGPT is smart and will still understand the prompt.
